Other Taxes
There are other taxes collected for Prepared Food & Beverage, Transient Occupancy Tax and Short Term Rental Tax. You can pay these taxes using the monthly or quarterly forms that are mailed to each taxpayer on the 25th of each month.

The permits that can be obtained through this office include:
Site Plan/Subdivision Approval, Land Disturbing Activity Permits, Various Zoning Permits, Building Permits (electrical, plumbing, etc.), Demolition Permits, Sign Permits, Wetlands Permits, Variances, Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area Waivers.
A site plan needs to be filed. An appointment with a planner is recommended but not required. Those developers who go through a "preapplication" process will receive expedited reviews for their projects. For an appointment call (757) 890-3531.

Business-Related Signs
To erect a sign, a sign permit must be obtained. Call (757) 890-3524 for details. Size constraints vary with each zoning district.
Contact the Division of Development and Compliance for the procedure to get a sign permit. An application is required along with the requisite fee. Detailed drawings of the sign are required along with a locational drawing. The application materials are submitted to the Division of Building Regulation.
Fire Code Regulations
The source of the York County fire code follows the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (which is an amended version of the BOCA Fire Prevention Code) along with local amendments. The local amendments can be viewed on the County website.

Permit Review Processes
The review processes for different permits take different amounts of time.
- Site Plan (regular process) - up to 60 days.

- Building Permits - up to three weeks.
A Building Permit is required for all new construction, additions, alterations, and renovations. There is a charge for the permit.
If the electricity and gas have been turned off at a vacant business location, contact Virginia Natural Gas or Dominion Virginia Power to restore it. There is never a permit required for reconnection of a utility.

If a business wants to made an addition to an existing business or build a new building, a site plan must be submitted and approved and subsequently, a land disturbing activity permit and a building permit must be obtained. These are the typical permits that are required; others may be required for certain projects.
Home-Based Businesses
The issues involved in having a home-based business in York County would depend on the type of business, but certain activities are permitted as a matter of right while others required a special use permit. All businesses are required to register with the Commissioner of the Revenue for business license and home occupation zoning certification.

Signs are not permitted under any circumstances for home-based businesses. Any type of business can be conducted in the home, provided the home occupation would be limited to using their home for office use only. Home-based businesses can not hire people to work for them.
