Home Occupancy Use, Zoning Exceptions, Chesapeake Bay waivers and exceptions and sign permits.
A site plan will need to be filed and an appointment with a Planner is recommended. Call (757)868-3040 to setup an appointment.
Business-Related Signs
If a business wants to erect a sign, they must obtain a sign permit. For size contraints see the sign ordinance, which will be sent separately to you. To obtain a sign permit, you will have to submit an application and the $25 fee.

Permit Review Processes
The review processes for different permits take different amounts of time.
- Site plan review: up to 90 days
- Development plan review: up to 60 days
- Erosion and sediment control: up to 45 days
A building permit is required for building structures and there is a fee for the permit. If the electricity and gas have been turned off at a vacant business location, a Reconnect Permit is required to have to restored. A permit is also required wheneven an inspection is required. Contact:

A Reconnect Permit can be obtained the same day you apply for it. The contractor or homeowner can apply for the permit.
To apply for permits you may need a business license, state contractor's license or a tradesman card. If a business wants to make an addition to an existing business or build a new building a building permit is required.
Home-Based Businesses
