Local Contractor Licenses
Isle of Wight County does require licensure for building contractors, residential contractors, and subcontractors (electrical, plumbing, mechanical, masonry, etc) for making additions to existing structures, or for those involved in remodeling, repair, or demolition of existing structures.

Restaurants or establishments serving food and beverage to the public and any business on a private sewage or well system has to comply with health regulations in Isle of Wight County.

Liquor License
There is a county business license required for businesses, which sell beer, liquor and/or wine. This is in addition to the State ABC License. The Commissioner of the Revenue issues the license.

Other Taxes
Transient Occupancy Tax is paid quarterly to the Commissioner of the Revenue. The machinery and tool tax is also administered by the Commissioner's Office. The County has a cable television franchise tax. There is no prepared food and beverage tax in the county.

Zoning permits and land disturbing permits can be obtained through this office. A site plan will need to be files and an appointment with a planner is recommended. Call (757)365-6211 for an appointment.

Business-Related Signs
If a business wants to erect a sign, a site plan review and schematic review are required. Size constraints are according to zoning ordinance. A zoning permit is also required. The procedure for obtaining a sign permit is first a site plan review of the proposed location. Then, a schematic of sign, including colors, materials, dimensions, and height.

Permit Review Processes
The review processes for different permits take different amounts of time.

  1. Site plan residential - individual lot - minutes
  2. Site plan commercial - 30 to 60 days
  3. Subdivision plan - individual lot - 2 weeks to 30 days
    comprehensive - 30 to 60 days

A business permit is required for construction, alteration, or change of use of a building. The charge is according to fee schedule. For information on fee schedule, class (757)365-6213.

Electricity that has been off six monthes or more requires an inspection and release to utility company.

A permit is always required for reconnection of a utility. There is a $10.10 inspection fee.

A reconnection permit takes 10-15 minutes to get, then 24-48 hours for the inspection.

The owner, contractor, lessee, or agent may apply for a permit. Applicants name, address and telephone number; property owner name; contractor name, license number with expiration date, address and telephone number will be required to apply for the various permits.

If a business wants to make an addition to an existing building or build a new building, the following is required:
Commercial site plan review through the Department of Planning, (757)365-6211. Various permits through the Department of Inspections, (757)365-6213.

Home-Based Businesses
No retail sales from site, no employees, no equipment, materials, or supplies stored outside, no more than 25% of square footage residential used for business purposes. A zoning permit and business license are required.

Sign for home-based businesses should be no more than four in size and one per site. A home-based business can not hired people to work for them.
