Gloucester

Founded: 1651
Population: 36,858
Households: 5,663

Gloucester County was developed by colonists, primarily for tobacco plantations. It is rich in farmland, and the fishing industry is important to the county, as well.

Many of the plantation houses and private estates have been preserved. The daffodils, brought by the early settlers, have a thriving bulb industry, to which flower enthusiasts travel from all corners to attend the springtime Daffodil Festival.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science is a major graduate school, and a mindful steward of these seafood-rich waters.

Tourism and residential relocation serves to create numerous opportunities for entrepreneurs that offer products and services in every category.
